Payback for PABAC

PABAC (pronounced “Payback”) is a fundraising scheme that grew out of the Internet freedom of speech campaign sparked last year by 18-year-old Bennett Haselton.
The student found that CYBERsitter, Internet filtering software marketed by Solid Oak Software, was banning a variety of Web resources such as those featuring gay/lesbian rights and feminism. He published his findings on Peacefire’s Web site, which itself was then blocked by CYBERsitter’s filtering.
The Page Authors’ Benefit Against Censorship (PABAC) is an Internet-based fund raising project that is hosted by Peacefire. It was designed to raise money for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) lawsuit against the New York Communications Decency Act. Peacefire members simply hired out their Web design skills in return for a $10 per hour donation to the legal fund.
