Fundraising events can sometimes go tragically wrong. In New Jersey (USA), for example, in October 1997 a young boy was murdered while out fundraising from house to house.

The National Parent Teacher Association (USA) has published guidelines on fundraising in response to this tragedy. They conclude “we hope that this devastating occurrence will cause the American public to question why families are pressured to fund-raise in school, and to look for more equitable ways to meet the funding needs of our public education system”.
