Cathryn Oldman, Head of Fundraising and Communications at Broadway Homelessness and Support in London, has won through to the finals of the Working Families/Lloyds TSB Best Boss competition 2004.

She was nominated by Fundraising Officer Laura Ballantyne who said: “Cat has been a fantastic boss. She recognises that, in spite of our workload, we need time to develop ourselves as well – she always looks for the potential in people and helps them to do things they didn’t realise they were capable of doing.”

Cathryn says: “My team is very committed and it is important as a manager to ensure that boundaries are maintained and staff are encouraged to nurture a work-life balance. We have flexible working hours and generous leave, and I find that you get a lot back in the long term if you are supportive, understanding and adaptable when an individual’s personal life impacts on their work life.”

The Working Families/Lloyds TSB Best Boss competition was launched in 2000 to celebrate the unsung local heroes who show other managers how a happy team with balanced lives makes for a ‘win-win’ situation for everyone.

Britain’s Best Boss 2004 will be announced at a celebratory lunch at the House of Lords on 24 June. He or she will receive £1000 of travel vouchers and the person who nominated him or her, as well as the competition runners up, will each receive a bottle of champagne.
