Search for West Yorkshire's best male volunteers

Howard Lake | 3 September 2004 | News

Model Nell McAndrew is fronting a competition being run by national volunteering charity TimeBank and the Yorkshire Evening Post to search for West Yorkshire’s best male volunteers, modern day heroes who are “Yorkshire Champions”.

The regional competition aims to recognise these commendable men and to inspire more men to volunteer.

Throughout September, the campaign will be asking people to nominate men in West Yorkshire who make a real difference by volunteering their own time for the benefit of others. The winner will be given £500 and four runners-up will each be given £200 to donate to their cause.

Nell said: “Our Yorkshire Champions could be helping others through football coaching, handyman schemes, mentoring or anything else that has a positive effect on people’s lives.

“Charities in Yorkshire need more male volunteers and we hope that this competition will encourage more men to offer their services!”

The competition is being run as part of TimeBank’s ‘Yorkshire Champions’ campaign, which aims to raise awareness about volunteering and encourage Yorkshire’s men to give time. 74% of volunteers in Yorkshire are female, yet regional charities say they have specific volunteering opportunities that are “more suited to men”, such as gardening and driving or even building go-karts.

Charities in West Yorkshire could use this opportunity to recognise and reward a male volunteer. The deadline for entries 20 September 2004.
