Sunday Times publishes Rich List 2006

The Sunday Times has today published its annual guide to the richest 1,000 people in Britain and Ireland. The combined wealth of these people has risen 20.6% in the past year alone to £300 billion, with £60 million now being the entry level for the list.

The rapid growth in wealth of the list members is indicated in many ways, not least by the fact that there are now 54 British billionaires, compared to 16 in 1997.

According to Philip Beresford, who compiles the rich list, “giving among the most wealthy is up by just under 36% year on year to the highest levels yet seen in the annual Sunday Times giving survey”. The Sunday Times Giving Index this year reached £453 million, up from £333 million in 2005. The Giving Index is lead this year by Robert Edmiston who gave over £28 million to the Christian Vision charity, £13 million to projects spreading the Christian message internationally, and £2 million to a Coventry city academy.

As usual the Sunday Times website includes considerable detail and analysis on this year’s wealthiest people. You can view or download as a PDF tables of the wealthiest women, entertainers, jewellers, greetings card producers, fashion workers, together with telecoms millionaires, Welsh millionaires, richest husbands and wives, Scotland’s richest, and the year’s biggest risers and fallers. You can also search the list by name.

As well as the Sunday Times Giving Index there is also a list of the top 30 political donors and top 20 political lenders, and a list of notable donations by list members.
