HOSPICE EASTER CAMPAIGN RAISES MORE THAN £7,000
11/04/07
Staff and guests at St Teresa’s Hospice in Darlington have been enjoying more than just eggs this Easter, after their spring fundraising drive raised over £7,000.
A substantial number of pubs, clubs, schools and social groups from across Darlington and the surrounding area, took part in the Hospice’s Easter fundraising campaign by hosting events, including raffles and coffee mornings, and taking part in the charity’s own fundraising activities.
Among the biggest contributors to the fund were the staff and customers of the White Heifer That Travelled public house at Darlington’s West Park, who raised £600 through a specially organised Race Night and raffle, supported by Ladbrokes. This money was matched by the pub’s brewery, Marstons and, after handing over a cheque totalling £1,200, the owners of the White Heifer signed up as a long-term charity partner in support of St Teresa’s Hospice.
Various other companies, including Orange, asked their staff to make an individual donation, with collectors tugging at the heart strings by going round dressed as the Easter bunny.
Not to be outdone, the Hospice’s own dedicated band of faithful volunteers gave up their free time to host a two-week Easter egg tombola in the Queen Street shopping centre. Boosted by sponsorship of £750 from Barclays Bank, as well as Easter egg donations from staff at Asda and Tesco, the stall was a huge success, with shoppers also stopping to purchase St Teresa’s cuddly merchandise, teddy bear chicks, bunnies, lambs and ducks.
The money raised throughout the campaign (Monday, March 26 to Thursday, April 5,) is still pouring in, with the total likely to exceed more than £7,000. Every penny will be used to fund St Teresa’s Hospice’s range of palliative and respite care services, including day care, at-home care, counselling and complementary therapies and the in-patient unit.
St Teresa’s Hospice Director, Jane Bradshaw, said: Everybody at the Hospice has been overwhelmed by the amount of support we have received during this year’s Easter fundraising campaign and I would like to send a huge thank you to everyone who took part. Generosity of this level will make a huge difference to everyone who uses our services, be it adults or children.”
