Effective safety resources for the curriculum

Howard Lake | 30 April 2007 | Newswire

Knowledge is power – to grow, to achieve and to stay alive. 256 children an hour are taken to hospitals following accidents and at least 700 will die and 10,000 will be left disabled every year. Learning how to grow up safely is a vital part of any child’s education.
The Children’s Safety Education Foundation (CSEF) is the leading charitable supplier of children’s safety resources and is driven by the belief that knowledge can save lives. As the charity’s Chief Executive John McNamee explains: As one of the world’s most developed countries, it is inconceivable that children might come to harm just because they have not had enough information on how to stay safe. CSEF is passionate about providing the tools children and young people need to grow into confident adults.”
Through raising funds from donations and private sector partnerships, CSEF is able to provide resources free to schools. Each resource is tailored to fit in with the national curriculum so that they can be integrated into lesson plans. Each resource is full of fun and interactive activities meaning the valuable learning comes through enjoyment.
Resources are available for Key Stages 1-3 as well as for parents, teachers and carers. Each is appropriately developed along the Educate, Explore and Enable technique. Rather than preaching instructions to children, the resources are developed as if through their own eyes. Children can be equipped with the tools to avoid fire and other every day dangers, learn basic First Aid, handle peer pressure and bullying, and learn the value of citizenship. Full lists of all CSEF’s bespoke resources are available through their website.
CSEF’s has works closely with major statutory agencies and companies nationwide to produce the resources. The charity’s work with the private sector has seen the development of school resources for TOTAL Fuels and Warburtons. Recently CSEF has formed a partnership with the Metropolitan Police service to design resources for the Junior Citizenship Campaign. In the North West, the charity has helped facilitate the highly successful Crucial Crew interactive learning days alongside the Greater Manchester Fire, Police and Ambulance services.
If you would like to use CSEF’s resources in your school, please contact the charity via www.csef.net or call 0161 477 5122
