17 YEAR OLD OPERA DIVA NAMED YOUNG SINGER OF THE YEAR
11/05/2007
Lauren Power has been named Darlington’s Young Singer of the Year 2007 and will now perform live at a prestigious local concert in aid of two of the town’s most popular charities.
In April, 17-year-old Lauren competed against eight other finalists in the live grand final of the Music for Darlington Young Singer Competition 2007, where she very much impressed the judges with her perfrormance.
Lauren successfully won the Young Singer title, and will now join performers from county schools and orchestras on stage at the Promenade for Youth Concert, which is being held at The Dolphin Centre in Darlington on Friday, May 11. She also received a cash prize of £100.
Lauren overcame stiff competition from fellow musicians Britney Knowles, Georgia McIntyre, Leena-Louise Brass, Natasha Park, Hayley Mackay, Laura Beveridge, Charlotte Churchman and Nicole Kay.
All proceeds raised from the forthcoming Promenade for Youth Concert, will be split equally between mental health charity Darlington Mind and St Teresa’s Hospice’s ‘Half a Million Hugs’ campaign, which is raising funds for a brand new Counselling and Complementary Therapies Centre, including a new service designed to support children who have been bereaved.
Jane Bradshaw, Director of St Teresa’s Hospice, said: The Young Singer Competition is an excellent way for young performers to showcase their talents and once again we were astounded by the sheer quality of entries that we received. Lauren’s operatic-style performance was particularly memorable and I am certain that anyone who attends the Promenade for Youth Concert will be suitably impressed by her talent and vocal maturity.”
Tickets for the Promenade for Youth Concert, priced at £6.00 each, are available from The Dolphin Centre and St Teresa’s Hospice on Woodland Road.
