Oxfam celebrates life of Joe Mitty

Howard Lake | 8 November 2007 | News

Oxfam is celebrating the life of Joe Mitty, its first paid employee, who died on 30 September, with a page about him and his achievements on its website. Joe set up Oxfam’s first shop in Oxford in 1949, worked for the organisation for over 33 years, and is widely credited for founding the modern day charity shop.

Oxfam’s ‘Remembering Joe’ page includes a video of him receiving a lifetime achievement award in 2006 from then-Prime Minister Tony Blair at the ITV Daily Mirror Pride of Britain ceremony.

The charity credits Joe with leaving “an extraordinary legacy.” He made “an immense contribution to making the Oxfam shop network what it is today: 750 outlets across the UK, generating an annual profit of around £20 million, staffed by more than 20,000 volunteers, and frequented by an estimated 17 million customers a year.”
