Howard Lake | 27 January 2008 | News

The Tesco Charity Trust has made a grant of £2,000 a partnership of Mencap, Mendip District Council and the Beckery Resource Centre in Glastonbury to provide courses for people with learning disabilities to improve their fitness and develop their own leisure skills. The grant came from the Trust’s community awards scheme.
It will allow the council to continue running a range of courses throughout Mendip which will help people to increase confidence, skill levels, fitness levels and help them progress to mainstream fitness opportunities on their own.
The two current activity sessions at Frome and Shepton Mallet leisure centres will continue, while another will be launched shortly in Glastonbury.
The Tesco Charity Trust was founded in 1987 and supports local and national charities. Its Community Awards scheme ensures that the majority of the trust’s grants are targeted towards local communities where the supermarket chain has stores.
Community Awards benefit local organisations whose core work supports children’s education and welfare, children and adults with disabilities, and elderly people.
The trust aim to give around £360,000 each year through the Community Awards scheme, and awards are one-off donations and range between £1,500 and £5,000.
