The first Shackleton Foundation Leadership Award has been presented to Nick Nielsen, co-founder and director of educational charity Envision. The £10,000 award was presented to the UK-based organisation at a fundraising dinner for the Foundation hosted by Robert Swan OBE.

The award has been established to identify and support those inspirational leaders wishing to make a difference, particularly to the less advantaged. Applicants had to demonstrate how they exemplified the spirit of explorer and leader Sir Ernest Shackleton, with particular emphasis on their leadership and vision

Selected from a shortlist of six candidates, Nick Neilson said: "I am extremely grateful to The Shackleton Foundation for their support and belief in the work of Envision. This award allows us to further fulfill our mission of enabling young people to realise their potential to bring about change. We plan to use the award money to develop our Graduate Network and inspire those who have been involved in our programme to continue making a positive difference in their communities."

The Shackleton Foundation was set up earlier this year to celebrate the legacy of Sir Ernest Shackleton, who succeeded in leading all his crew to safety on his 1908-09 Nimrod Expedition to Antarctica. It aims to raise £10 million over the next five years to support individuals of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds who exemplify the spirit of Sir Ernest Shackleton.

In October this year, to mark the launch of the Shackleton Foundation, six descendants of Shackleton’s original expedition team, including his great-grandson, will retrace their ancestors’ steps, in a landmark attempt to finish the job and reach the South Pole on foot, hauling sleds themselves over 900 miles.
