Sandwich board promotes Onekind’s viral campaign ‘They’re Here’

UK animal charity OneKind has made it to the final 16 entries out of 1,350 submitted to YouTube’s DoGooder Nonprofit Video Awards. The awards are an annual contest that recognises non-profit organisations that making the best use of new media to engage people and advance social causes.

The awards are open to organisations from the United States, Canada, Australia and the UK, but OneKind,w ith its “They’re Here” video, is one of only three of the finalists not based in the US.

The YouTube community can now choose this year’s winners from among the list of finalists. Votes can be offered for more than one video, but only one vote per day will be counted. The winning film will receive exposure to a global audience via the YouTube homepage and a prize of $2,500.

“They’re Here” has already attracted widespread attention, including speculation that it might be a new sci-fi movie.

It is, however, a hoax designed to illustrate that “HumanKind and AnimalKind are really all OneKind”.

John Robertson, Web and Publications Manager at OneKind, said:

“In creating this movie our desire was to make people reflect on just how incredible the animals are who we share our everyday lives with, and the vital role they play in our world; that they are capable of thinking and feeling, and that they experience joy and pain just like us”.

A ‘They’re Here’ website allowed the curious to be amongst the first to be contacted on 10 October 2010, and sandwich board carriers appeared in the streets of London, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Their signs proclaimed ‘They’re Here – 10.10.10’. Even the people wearing the boards had no idea at the time what they were promoting.

“They’re Here” has already won the Christopher Johnson Award for viral campaigning at the annual Movieviral awards earlier this year. Public voting is now open.
