Battling Bands Hit A Charity Note

Howard Lake | 15 September 2011 | News

Bernie Galewski from Against Breast Cancer in Abingdon has teamed up with the SAE Institute in Oxford
to launch an Oxford Battle of The Bands that’s set to discover who’s the hottest music talent in the region right now.
The project will also raise valuable funds for charity through ticket sales to the Oxford Battle of The Bands gig at O2 Academy Oxford on 8th October. Funds will support Against Breast Cancer’s vital research work into breast cancer.
The 6 nominated bands, headlined by ‘The Black Hats’, will be judged by the public using an online voting system ahead of the gig and a clap-o-meter on the night. The voting campaign is going viral, with video clips posted on the Oxford Battle of the Bands Facebook page so voters can watch the bands perform and vote for their favourite band.
Bernie who came up with the idea for the charity said “This is a fantastic opportunity for bands to take their music to another level. I have dreamt of this for a long time and I am really pleased that the charity will benefit from the initiative.”
Steve Hartley, Head of Corporate & Media Relations at the SAE Institute said “We are delighted to offer opportunities to young talent by partnering Against Breast Cancer on this project; this benefits the wider community at the same time as providing our students with practical hands-on studio recording experience.”
The SAE Institute is offering a fantastic prize for the winning band – a day in their state of the art recording studios. SAE students and their tutors will produce a digital master from the winner’s music session.

Against Breast Cancer
Against Breast Cancer is a charity dedicated to funding ground breaking research to improve detection and increase survival after breast cancer diagnosis. Our expert scientists use one of the largest collections of breast cancer patient samples in the UK to look for vital information that could identify the spread of the disease.
More women are surviving breast cancer every year. Against Breast Cancer’s research looks at the whole woman through three interlinked areas of research – biochemistry, immunology, and diet and lifestyle. The charity’s research is studying new ways that could help doctors identify and treat secondary breast cancer faster and more effectively and our ultimate aim is to find a vaccine.
The charity’s national Diet & Lifestyle study is one of the largest in the world looking at the effects of diet, lifestyle and complementary treatments on breast cancer and long-term survival. Support is vital for Against Breast Cancer if it is to continue its innovative research to develop ways to improve detection and survival after diagnosis so women and men can look forward to a future free of breast cancer.
