Charities offered places on Great South West Walk

Howard Lake | 15 November 2012 | News

The South West Coast Path Association is offering other charities the chance to take part in their Great South West Walk next Spring, so that they can raise funds for their own causes. In return, the Association will relieve participating charities of the logistics and administration involved in this kind of event.

Charities that wish to take part can by a 'Golden Bond' to secure a place for a walker for £60 each.

The SWCPA hopes that this will enable charities, especially smaller charities that could never take on organising an event like this, the chance to benefit from it.

Ken Carter, Chairman of the Great South West Walk, said: "Throughout the year we see various charities benefitting from walks around the South West Coast Path and the organisation involved is considerable. With our Great South West Walk everything is in place for the charities – from posters and registration forms to the website and entry system. We will also deal with issues such as transport and insurance for walkers – leaving charities to just focus on the task of engaging supporters for their own cause.”

He added: "The £60 from each Golden Bond will help cover our costs, as well as raise some funds towards our own target of £250,000 for the Coast Path itself.

"Many take for granted that the path will always be there as a vital fundraising tool, when in fact funding for its maintenance has shrunk in recent years. The £250,000 that we are raising is for improvement projects to the path, over and above general maintenance, to ensure it is accessible and of a surface safe to walk on all year round.”

Golden Bonds must be purchased by 1 February 2013, and each charity’s walkers must be registered with the SWCPA by 18 February.

Charities can choose to get involved with just one or several legs of the walk.

About the Great South West Walk

The Great South West Walk, which celebrates the SWCPA’s 40th anniversary, takes place in April and May 2013 and will consist of a series of sponsored walks which have been broken down into 56 legs. Done in relay, the legs will cover the entire 630 mile path around Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, as well as the Exmoor coast through Somerset.

Each leg will be guided by local experts, rangers and path wardens, who are all assisting the SWCPA with this event.
