#NoMakeUpSelfie campaign raises €750,000 for Irish Cancer Society

The Irish Cancer Society has been ‘stunned’ by the success of the #NoMakeUpSelfie campaign which has raised around €750,000 in the last week.
“We’re stunned by it all and are hugely grateful for every donation,” Kathleen O’Meara, Senior Manager of Communications at the Irish Cancer Society, told the Irish Times. She added that some people thought that it had been inspired by Ellen de Generes Oscars selfie.
By last Friday the figure for the selfie campaign totalled €400,000 but nearly doubled over the weekend. As the campaign took off last week, income doubled in 24 hours from €200,000 to €400,000.
The #NoMakeUpSelfie craze has developed as a viral movement and was not created specifically for or by the Irish Cancer Society. UK cancer charities, especially Cancer Research UK, have also benefited financially.
The Irish Cancer Society said the spontaneity of the #NoMakeUpSelfie shows how powerful social media can be for charities, especially when it can be underpinned by a giving platform like LikeCharity‘s text donation service.
The campaign was also supported by celebrities, with the funding going to the Irish Cancer Society’s breast cancer work.
