Over 300 organisations join GivingTuesday movement in the UK

More than 300 businesses and charities have signed up to the #GivingTuesday movement in the UK, five weeks ahead of the first time that this international day of giving extends to the UK for the first time.
Partners of the GivingTuesday campaign, which began in the USA in 2012, include Cancer Research UK, BT, Macmillan, JustGiving, Blackbaud, RSPCA, Facebook, Argos, Homebase, Glamour, the i paper, Rosie’s Rainbow Fund, and the National Union of Students.
The campaign invites people to give their time, money or voice to charity on 2 December 2014. It was created as a more positive response to the pre-Christmas spending on consumer products on days dubbed ‘Black Friday’ and ‘Cyber Monday’.
As well as the UK and USA, GivingTuesday has spread to Canada, Mexico, Israel, Australia, Singapore and Latin America. Last year, with support from the White House, plentiful celebrities, and 10,000 partners, many charities saw a considerable spike in donations on the day.

UK leading partners

In the UK the campaign is being led by Charities Aid Foundation, the Cabinet Office and Blackbaud Europe. It was launched to charities in the UK in May, and UK Fundraising’s Howard Lake chaired the event.
Hannah Terrey, Head of Policy and Campaigns at the Charities Aid Foundation, said:

“We are delighted that charities large and small are joining businesses to use this global movement to support the causes they care deeply about.
“#GivingTuesday has been taken up by countries all over the world and aims to support charities by getting people talking about causes, connecting with issues they care about and acting to make a difference.
“Anything from a tweet to a fundraising drive can help make people think about the amazing work that charities do for millions of people”.
