Givey expands to accept donations to causes around the world

Howard Lake | 22 July 2015 | News

Online donation platform Givey is expanding internationally to allow anyone who wants to do good for others around the world to fundraise via the system.
The social enterprise, set up five years ago in partnership with the PayPal Giving Fund, has handled £1 million in donations for 8,000 charities in the UK so far. The global scope will begin on 1 August.
Until now Givey has enabled people to fundraise for charities. From next month it will enable people to set up and fundraise for projects. These Givey ‘Projects’, as they will be known, can be for registered or non-registered charities, groups of people, individuals or organisations from anywhere around the world. For example, it could be a local society or hospice that lacks charitable status but wanted to help a member of its community, or new technology ideas with the potential to help alleviate the suffering of millions.
They will be able to use Givey Share, Givey’s content donation mechanism, to create and share compelling content that invites donations. In the two months since its launch in April 2015 it has generated over £180,000.
To ensure the system is not misused for non-charitable purposes, Givey’s system will also include vetting services.
Givey passes on 100% of donations (including Gift Aid) to the intended charity. It is ranked number one for fundraising platforms on MoneySavingExpert.com.

Partnership with Stripe

Givey’s international expansion has been assisted by a new partnership with international payment service Stripe, which offers flexible payout dates for charities and greater control over the data received, “greatly improving the payment processing experience” for Givey’s users, charities and paying businesses.
Givey generates some of its income by its ‘fees covered by’ service, which invites businesses to cover the 5% transaction fee on projects, specific content or employees’ donations in order both to boost their brand and keep Givey free for givers.
In addition Givey is working with train operating company London Midland and investment technology provider FNZ to facilitate instant donation matching. This is “proven to deepen employee engagement and increase donations” says Givey’s founder Dave Erasmus, based on an employee experiment with Ogilvy Labs earlier this year:

Erasmus said of Givey’s international expansion:

“By expanding internationally and opening ourselves out to projects, we want to focus on helping big thinking, charitable entrepreneurs to solve problems for others uninhibited by the onerous process of being approved by the charity commission in their country. This, combined with our innovative social giving mechanism, provides the best of the #ALS Ice Bucket phenomena combined with the power of direct action from the crowd.”
