Show the love by donating your Valentine’s Day funds, & other fundraising ideas

With the Healthcare Workers’ Foundation (HWF) calling on the UK’s romantics to show their love for someone else this Valentine’s Day, and donate what they would otherwise have spent going out to healthcare workers on the frontline, here’s more on that story, along with a selection of other fundraising ideas.
Research from UK comparison site Finders UK has found that Brits still plan on celebrating the day of love and will spend an average of £25 this Valentine’s Day. But, with a very different world this year, the charity is encouraging the nation to donate their Valentine’s Day funds instead.
Donations received will help the Healthcare Worker’s Foundation to continue delivering goods and services, including PPE, free counselling sessions and childcare grants.
Jeeves Wijesuriya, spokesperson for Healthcare Workers’ Foundation said:

“The past year has been rocky for all of us. And we must also remember our frontline workers have been under huge pressure during this pandemic, putting themselves at risk to care for us and our loved ones.
“If we are to keep our NHS and frontline staff going, we must do all we can to support their mental health and wellbeing. We want to show healthcare workers just how loved they are this Valentine’s Day. Any donation, no matter how big or small, will go towards helping those working tirelessly to assist us in our hour of need.”

Pair my Pet partners UK animals with those in need overseas

Another different idea, Dorset based veterinary charity Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) has launched Pair My Pet. The programme pairs loved and well cared for pets with other animals across the world who aren’t as fortunate – those that live on the streets or whose owners don’t have access to or can’t afford basic veterinary care.  
For a small monthly donation, the charity matches pets with some of the most vulnerable patients in its care, animals like ‘Bear’ the dog from Thailand (pictured above), a German Shepherd turfed out on the streets when his family relocated. Hungry and exhausted, he wandered into the territories of other strays where he was attacked and sustained a deep cut to his neck. Finally he was rescued and taken to WVS’s local clinic and shelter. He has since found a loving home.  
As part of the Pair My Pet programme, the nominated pet will receive a welcome pack, including a letter from their new friend, a certificate, pet-friendly recipes, and a postcard to write to said friend. They’ll also receive updates throughout the year.
Fundraising and Communications Manager for WVS, Duncan Hook, said:

“We’re a nation of animal lovers and our pets are very much part of our families. Now, on top of the chews, squeaky toys and balls, pets can be paired with a less fortunate animal around the world. It’s a fun way to support animal welfare projects, allowing the whole family (and your furry friend) to feel like you’re really making a difference.”

 

Blue Cross Yours Furever campaign

This Valentine’s Day saw Blue Cross launch a new campaign called Yours Furever, which invites pet owners across the country to channel their inner Shakespeare and write a love letter or poem for their favourite furry pals.

To officially mark the launch of the campaign, the charity has teamed up with five animal-loving celebrities – Eastenders actress Emma Barton, actress and model Jorgie Porter, comedian Bill Bailey, Strictly Come Dancing star Anton Du Beke, and classical singer Russell Watson – to create a special Valentine’s Day video compilation.

In it, they read a heartfelt poem dedicated to their special valentine. At first, viewers are led to believe that this poem is meant for their partner, spouse or significant other – but towards the end of the video the penny drops, and it suddenly becomes clear that they are in fact talking about their beloved pet.

The video ends with a call to action, asking pet owners to share a personalised love letter or poem for their pet on social media this Valentine’s Day weekend in support of the campaign.

To take part in the campaign, pet owners can write a poem or letter explaining why their pet is so special to them, and then share this on Twitter or Instagram – tagging @the_blue_cross and using the hashtag #YoursFurever. The love letter will be featured on the Blue Cross website.
