'Water' Lot of Wasted Water says World Vision

Amid the current heatwave World Vision is reminding people in the UK to spare a thought for the millions of people across the world who do not have the luxury of water on tap.
“We use water in a lot of frivolous ways during the summer,” says Jane Evans of World Vision. “For example, watering your garden with a sprinkler uses up to 540 litres an hour – this could provide a day’s drinking water for 120 people in Ethiopia. According to the Natural Mineral Water Information Service, the UK drinks 1.6 billion litres of bottled water a year with the British market worth around £900 million. Yet for less than the price of a dozen bottles of water 15 families in Niger could be provided with water filters to prevent water-related diseases such as cholera.”
The charity adds that its Alternative Gift Catalogue has a number of water-related gifts that people can buy on behalf of family and friends which are then sent to those in need in the developing world.
