Lady Heald dies

Lady Heald CBE, volunteer fundraiser for cancer charities and chairman of the National Gardens Scheme, has died aged 99.

Daphne Heald was a founding member of the fundraising committee of Marie Curie Cancer Care, and was actively involved in supporting a range of other charities.

She was chairman of the appeals committee of the Royal College of Nursing for 28 years from 1950, a former chair of the Surrey committee of the Distressed Gentlefolk’s Aid Association, and chairman of the National Gardens Scheme for 28 years to 1979.

Her fundraising activities were recognised with the naming of the Daphne Heald Research Unit.

She made extensive use of her home, Chilworth Manor, in Surrey, to host fundraising events for a range of charities.
