Costain to raise £1m between four charities

Howard Lake | 12 June 2014 | News

Engineering company Costain is marking its 150th anniversary next year by undertaking to rise £1 million to be split between four national charities. The British Heart Foundation (BHF), Macmillan Cancer Support, The Princes Trust and Samaritans will each receive an equal share of the sum raised. From January 2015 the company will be inviting its employees to raise the £1 million sum through various fundraising activities throughout the year.
The charities were selected by Costain, so there was no pitching process.
Most of the events in the campaign will be created and run by Costain staff. That will avoid any difficulties of balance if staff enter some of the charities’ own fundraising events. However, plans are being drawn up to ensure equal numbers of places for each charity at third party events such as the Great North Run and the London Marathon.

Charitable foundation

Costain is already setting up the Costain Charitable Foundation to which it will make an initial donation to launch the campaign.

Catherine Warbrick, Director for Corporate Responsibility at Costain, said:

“Each of the charities’ work resonates with many of the initiatives Costain is currently involved with, whether it’s trying to help young people into work or ensuring and improving the wellbeing, both mentally and physically, of its employees and the communities it serves”.
