Bupa Great Run partnership raises £1.5m for Diabetes UK

Howard Lake | 10 December 2014 | News

Over the past three years over 20,000 participants have taken part in over 33 runs to raise £1.5 million for Diabetes UK as nominated charity of the Bupa Great Run series.
Since Bupa chose it as its nominated charity partner in 2012, Diabetes UK has seen its runners cover 206,557 miles between them – the equivalent of running around the world more than eight times.

The money raised from the partnership has funded 216 Healthy Lifestyle Roadshows across the UK. At these, almost 46,000 people were given free risk assessments to help them understand the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.
Almost 24,000 of those assessed were found to be at moderate to high risk of developing this devastating condition. Consequently, Diabetes UK stated that “every single great runner, who ran for Diabetes UK, has helped to encourage at least one person at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes to talk to their doctor”.

Paula Franklin, UK Medical Director, Bupa, said:

“We chose Diabetes UK as our nominated charity partner because raising awareness of the risk factors of Type 2 diabetes and advising on lifestyle changes to reduce that risk, strongly supports our vision to help people live longer, healthier, happier lives. We are delighted that we have been able to help so many thousands of people take that first important step towards a healthier life and would like to thank Diabetes UK for making this such a successful partnership.”

“Next year we will be offering more fantastic fundraising opportunities including places in the Great North Run and the London Bridges challenge”.

Prize-winning partnership

The partnership’s achievements were also praised at the British Medical Association (BMA) patient information awards 2014, at which part of the education work funded by the events won the award for the ‘long term conditions’ special category.
