POLAM HALL PUPILS GO EVEN GREENER!
4/12/06
Pupils at Polam Hall School in Darlington have been doing their bit to help the environment by planting 30 trees as part of National Tree Week.
The Junior School Council applied for delivery of trees from The Woodland Trust, and will be dedicating a newly-planted tree to each class in the Junior School.
National Tree Week, which ran from November 22 to December 3, is a festival designed to mark the start of the tree planting season, and a nationwide celebration of trees and woods. The Woodland Trust is campaigning to create more woodland in the UK.
In addition to their efforts to grow trees in the UK, both the Junior and Senior Schools are supporting Alupro in its efforts to grow trees in Burkino Faso, West Africa, by organising a collection of aluminium cans.
The tree planting is the latest environmentally friendly scheme to be launched at Polam Hall School. For the last 12 months, the Junior and Senior Schools have been participating in various waste recycling projects. Recycling bins can be found in many areas of the school, including classrooms.
Marie Green, head at Polam Hall School, said: Our students are all aware of the need to care for the environment. The recycling schemes have been successful throughout the school and it is a natural progression now to enhance our school environment with the new trees.
The pupils are aware that we need to preserve our natural resources for future generations and Junior School girls have been writing poems about the environment to encourage more recycling. We are proud to see them embracing not only National Tree Week here in the UK, but promoting appeals to help with tree planting in other parts of the world too.”
