Send a Cow charity urges: Trust your giving instincts in 2008
Hoping to change your life – and the lives of people in need – in the New Year by giving up some free time for a charity? Then you’re far from alone.
According to new research carried out for the international development charity Send a Cow, which runs sustainable agricultural programmes in sub-Saharan Africa, 60% of adults in the UK say that the spirit of Christmas makes them feel they would like to volunteer for a good cause.
Far from being the ‘me’ generation, young adults (aged between 16 and 24) are the most likely age group to say they would like to give up some free time to help others, with 68% giving it some thought during the festive season. And the idea appeals to more women than men, with 66% expressing an interest against 49% of men.
Send a Cow Volunteer Development Manager David Turner said: “Don’t just think about volunteering – do it! By volunteering for Send a Cow in 2008, you’ll be helping poor families in Africa build themselves a better future, and you’ll also be doing something fun and fulfilling for yourself.
“At Send a Cow, we’re introducing a range of new volunteering roles in 2008 to make sure there’s something that suits everyone, whether you like writing articles, talking to schoolchildren, raising money in church or giving us a hand at shows. We give volunteers lots of training and ongoing support, because we know that we really couldn’t do without them.

The survey also found that:
· Those aged 45-54 are least likely to contemplate volunteering, with 56% expressing interest
· 51% of people say they could give up 1-2 hours per week to a good cause, 23% could manage 2-4 hours, and an impressive 9% of people could give more than 4 hours.
The survey was carried out by tickbox.net for Send a Cow, and is based on a survey sample of 1374 adults.
