Abingdon's in the pink during October for Against Breast Cancer

Howard Lake | 4 September 2009 | News

Abingdon is going to turn a ‘Splash of Pink’ on Saturday 10th October in aid of Against Breast Cancer, a research based charity located on the town’s Science Park. Timed to coincide with breast cancer awareness month, the event is designed to engage residents, retailers and local businesses in raising essential funds for research into the disease.

The charity has an unusual request for owners of pink vehicles to volunteer to take part in a pink convoy around the town centre, marking the kick off of a fun-filled day and the judging of the best dressed window display by local retailers. Local celebrity Fabia Cerra, a semi finalist from Britain’s Got Talent will be helping out on the day.

Between 10.00 am and 16.00 pm the market square will be packed with entertainments including belly
dancers, Morris men, face painting, Larkmead Performing Arts and a roundabout ride.

Against Breast Cancer’s Abingdon Support Group is organising the Splash of Pink day and Jemma Jones, spokesperson for the group said “Successful pink days have been staged in local towns including Witney, raising thousands of pounds for Against Breast Cancer and now we want to show what Abingdon can do. We would like local businesses to enter into the spirit of the occasion by organising their own fundraising event during the month of October. This could be anything from holding a pink cake day to a dress down day for staff.”

Patricia Leathem, CEO of Against Breast Cancer said “The essential funds raised from these events will help us continue our valuable research into the secondary spread of breast cancer and our ultimate goal of finding a vaccine for the disease. Having moved to Abingdon in the Spring we are keen to become active members of the local community and we hope the ‘Splash of Pink’ initiative will bring everyone together for a great cause and help promote the town too.”

Against Breast Cancer:

Against Breast Cancer is a registered charity that funds unique research into breast cancer. Our aim is to find vital information to increase survival after diagnosis and ultimately to discover a vaccine against breast cancer.

Against Breast Cancer’s team of researchers, based at University College London, is leading an innovative research programme which analyses how the cancer cell, patients’ natural resistance and their environment interact. Our unique Diet & Lifestyle Study, working with women who already have breast cancer to find ways to maximise their survival, is taking place in 50 hospitals across the UK.

Our commitment to finding a vaccine against breast cancer needs more vital resources to help realise our dream of a future free of breast cancer – as soon as possible.
