Kerrygold, the butter brand owned by a cooperative of Irish dairy farmers, has launched the Kerrygold Community Awards.
First run last year, the awards are designed to” encourage, support and reward people all over the UK that come together to achieve a common goal that brings benefits to a whole community”.
People or organisations with a good idea for a community project and who require funding may enter the Community Awards. However, national registered charities are excluded from entering: the rules state that projects must be “staffed by members of that community. These projects should be non-profit generating and should not be initiated by national registered charities”.
Last year the “Incredible Edible” won the Most Inspirational Community Group award, chosen from around 100 entries nationwide. The group aims to increase the amount of local food grown and eaten in the town of Todmorden to reduce the town’a carbon footprint. Businesses, schools, the community, and institutions such as the health services and local authority are all encouraged to be involved in planting and maintaining communal vegetable patches whilst any disused public spaces have been transformed into community herb gardens, orchards and vegetable patches.
