Apps for Good in competition for funding

Young mobile phone app inventors on a programme for low-income youth will face a panel of judges in front of an audience in Central London tonight to find out if their “Apps for Good” will win development for release into the booming app market.
Two teams of students on the Apps for Good course in South London have spent the past eight weeks thinking about the everyday problems that they and their communities face, and how best to tackle them with mobile and web technology.
With the ./guidance of Apps for Good tutors and mentors, the students have designed and developed two new app ideas that have the potential to make life easier for thousands of young Londoners.
Apps for Good was pioneered by CDI Europe, the UK hub of the global non-profit Centre for Digital Inclusion (CDI). Supported by funding from Dell YouthConnect, the programme ran at High Trees Community Centre in South London between April and June this year and this is the second course to run in the centre.
“Apps are changing the way we seek information on the go and the most active users are young people”, said Mark Schmid, Communications Director of Talk Talk, who are supporting tonight’s event at the Talk Talk Customer Experience Centre in Soho. “Now, youth in the United Kingdom are learning to design and develop apps for social change and community action which is a fantastic initiative, and one that Talk Talk is delighted to support on this occasion.
