Big Give to double donations to 423 charities this week

Howard Lake | 5 December 2011 | News

Online giving service The Big Give will this week match up to £5 million in donations made by the public during its Christmas Challenge. The donations are being doubled by a combination of major donors and charities’ own trustees. The ‘Big Givers‘ include the Reed Foundation, ICAP, Garfield Weston Foundation, Candis Magazine, the Pilgrim Trust and the Waterloo Foundation.
The Christmas Challenge runs from 5-9 December, with more ‘doubling’ funds released at 10am every day. This year 423 charities are participating and competing for the largest share of the funds. The giving starts at 10am today.
This is the fourth Christmas Challenge run on theBigGive.org.uk and, with a target of £10 million, aims to be the largest to date. Last
year’s Challenge raised over £9 million, with the first £1 million raised in just 45 minutes.
The Big Give was established by Sir Alec Reed as a platform for charities to showcase their work and has now evolved into “a website for intelligent giving, where donations go that little bit further”. Sir Alec himself is pledging £1 million to match donations.
The Big Give say that this is the first time that donors have had the opportunity to choose from such a wide range of charities and have their donations doubled.
