Virgin Money Giving raises over £100 million

Online fundraising website Virgin Money Giving has helped charities raise £100 million in the two and a half years since its launch. Over 2.5 million donations have been handled on the site, benefiting over 4,000 charities.
Virginmoneygiving.com was set up in October 2009 to coincide with Virgin Money’s sponsorship of the London Marathon. Last year over £51 million was raised by runners taking part in the race.
The service has also helped with the fundraising for other events including the Virgin Active London Triathlon, Nike Run to the Beat and the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon. Sally Barney, events manager at Royal Parks Foundation, said: “In its first four years, the Royal Parks Half Marathon has raised over £11 million for more than 360 charities – and with ongoing support from partners like Virgin Money Giving, this will continue to grow in future years.”
The site, which was launched on 14 October 2009, has also achieved a 85.5% Gift Aid reclaim rate on donations made.
Virgin Money Giving charges a flat registration fee of £100 + VAT for charities and a 2% fee on all donations before Gift Aid. It says that for every £10 raised charities receive £12.15.
The company says that it “charges charities the minimum fees needed to cover the running costs of the site”, adding that “any money left over after covering operating costs will go towards reducing fees further or improving services for fundraisers and charities”. It claims this not-for-profit approach has now “seen an extra £3.4million go to charities”.
