Cancer Research UK and Channel 4 announce new telethon

Howard Lake | 23 August 2012 | News

Channel 4 and Cancer Research UK are collaborating on ‘Stand Up To Cancer’, a new national telethon in October. The fundraising entertainment show will be preceded by a week of related programmes from Channel 4 on cancer issues.
Entertainers and presenters due to take part include Alan Carr, Davina McColl, and Dr Christian Jessen.
Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) began in the USA in 2008 and has raised over £100 million for cancer research. Its third campaign takes place on 7 September 2012. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow is a co-executive producer of the US programme, and she will be involved in the September launch event for the UK campaign.
The American show is a 60-minute fundraising special bringing together music, movies, TV, live music performances, comedy and live science. When it launched it was the first ever non-emergency fundraising event to be simultaneously broadcast across several major TV networks.

Dr Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK’s chief executive, urged the UK public to get involved with the event. “It’s not just technology or knowledge that we need to win our fight to beat cancer”, he said, “it’s funding – and every pound we raise is a step closer to achieving our goal to beat this disease.”
Money raised through the UK Stand Up To Cancer campaign will go towards the clinical research in the UK, ensuring that new treatments get to patients faster.

Grants to be available from Stand Up To Cancer

UK-based researchers at hospitals, universities, charities and research institutes across the UK will be able to apply for grants from the Stand Up To Cancer fund through an open call for proposals. Reflecting the collaboration with the USA, 20% of funds raised will support UK-US collaborative research to develop state-of-the-art new treatments to benefit patients here in the UK.
