Social investor Nominet Trust has announced the first projects that will receive funding from its Digital Edge programme. It has awarded more than £1 million to 14 organisations to support their work in using technology to improve young people’s participation in society.

One recipient, Room for Tea, connects guests in need of short-term, affordable accommodation in London with hosts who have a spare room in their homes. The funding will enable the organisation to develop its online platform and expand its reach to a wider number of potential young beneficiaries.

Nominet Trust launched its £2 million Digital Edge investment programme in June 2012. Annika Small, Nominet Trust CEO, commented: "Digital technology offers new ways for young people to develop and demonstrate their skills and talents. Importantly it can help young people to connect with the wider community, whether that is active participation in their local neighbourhood or contributing to an online group. This in turn can boost their skills and confidence which will help when it comes to applying for a job."

Nominet Trust has approved £1.4 million of funding in this latest round, to be distributed across 19 organisations. £988,000 has been awarded to projects through the Digital Edge programme. The remaining funding has been awarded to projects that are using technology to tackle other social issues including those facing older people.

The deadline for the next funding round of Digital Edge is 4 June 2013. The Trust encourages first stage applications to be submitted online by 1 May 2013.
